Do you remember your first book?
Most of us have a certain book full of colorful pictures that welcomes us into a whole new universe of adventure and excitement - our favorite as toddlers.
Our featured indie-author today is a creator of such a universe bound within a book, and tailored specifically today the youngest readers on the planet. She brings to the word of children’s literature, something more than just bright colors - she has added lessons to be learnt, full of diversity and compassion. As authors we bear a responsibility for the message we pass on through our media, and Medea is one of those authors who bears that responsibility and honor very well.
Here goes 5 Quick Questions & Answers
- with a Medea herself!
What does being an indie-author entail for you?
Being an indie-author gives you full control of how you want to present your work to the world, without having to compromise your vision. However, the financial cost of independently publishing my books has been the greatest challenge. But I’m a strong believer in the law of attraction. These stories came through me for a reason. So, the money to continue to independently publish my books will manifest, because I believe in my books and the valuable lessons that these stories tell. I feel that the positive messages that my books share are exactly what our world needs right now.
You have gotten your book out there and it's looking good - but if we go back to when you decided to be a writer, what set it in motion?
When I found out I was going to be a Grandma it was a full circle moment for me, so I started to bake a honey cake in honor of my Grandmother. My Bebi taught me how to bake a honey cake when I was a little girl. As I was making the cake, I realized all the different spices the cake had, like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, brown sugar and honey. It made me think of all the different ethnic mixes my new grandbaby would have and how they would be just like this honey cake I was baking. My stories are all based on my own family, whose members come from diverse ethnic backgrounds. I was born in Georgia U.S.S.R and came to Canada when I was 4 years old and my husband Esfandiar was born in Iran and immigrated to Canada in 1987. Our children Shanaz and Jean-Diar both have partners that have diverse ethnic backgrounds, Brandon and Reilly. My husband and I are proud grandparents as our daughter Shanaz and future son-in law Brandon just welcomed our first grandchild, his name is Lukenzo Kal Correia, born on March 2 at 9:55 am 2019. Our beautiful little Honeycake has a mix of Georgian, Persian, Jamaican and Guyanese. This unique mix is a perfect recipe, and it’s the reason why I call my grandchildren my little Honeycakes. That’s where the title of the series came from and the idea for the first book that would introduces the readers to our entire family. Hence, Honeycake: A Family of Spices. The words and stories started to pour out of me. I wrote 5 books in 4 days.
What is the best reaction you have seen to someone reading your work?
The most rewarding experience has been the outpour of messages I’ve been receiving from people around the world. I would like to share one of them with you today by Dr. Mansur Hasib, CISSP, PMP, CPHIMS - Award Winning Public Speaker, Cybersecurity and Healthcare Leader, Author, and Media Commentator
“This is without a doubt one of the best children's books I have read ever since I was a child. My favorites were Aesop's Fables because they all contained a very important civic lesson, a moral, or something to reinforce good values in children through an interesting and well-illustrated story. This book does exactly that. The idea of a common human bond through the blending of culture and national origins is beautifully represented as mixtures of exotic spices in a manner that children can easily understand. I expect this book to be enjoyed by parents, grandparents, and children alike and I expect the timeless message in the book to resonate for ages!”
Seeing little children’s faces light up when they read my book which looks just like their family has been the best and most rewarding reactions. There aren’t many books that showcases multicultural diverse families, so they feel a sense of belonging. Everyone loves the term “I’m a Honeycake” because at the end of the day we all have a little mix of spice in all of us.
What is one piece of advice you would give a budding author?
The one advice I have for budding Author’s, is that you have to be passionate about what you’re writing. If you are, then it will just flow naturally. You won’t be stuck for words. Be authentic and true to yourself. Don’t try to be like someone else, be who you are. That’s what we should all be striving for.
And finally - what's the dream?
The dream is to have my entire series in all the schools around the world as part of their curriculum. Children are so malleable, so teaching them about acceptance, kindness, living in gratitude and having honest and open communication, giving them step by step instructions on meditation, mindfulness and setting positive intentions for the day, will help them manage their emotions when things don’t go the way they hope. Giving children these tools at an early age, will help them grow into happy and fulfilled adults that aren’t stressed out but live in harmony with a healthy mind, body and spirit.
My hope is that if we instill these valuable lessons to our youth at an early age, we can shift the universe into a positive direction, and teach children that even though we look different and come from different places, we are all part of one race. The human race. In this beautiful world we live in, we are all one.
